Clinical Pathways Program Developed to Improve Care Delivery in Northern Ghana
With a mission of “leading with care”, AMPATH Ghana developed a Clinical Pathways Program at Tamale Teaching Hospital that aims to decrease preventable deaths and improve healthcare for patients it serves. This program creates standard guidelines for healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality medical care by incorporating evidence, best practices, and local expert consensus into easily accessible, shared models. The AMPATH Ghana team analyzed clinical conditions, reviewed existing guidelines and evidence, and used iterative testing of algorithms to develop the models. Pathways reflect the local context particularly staffing, education and training levels, supplies, medications, and physical layout. The Internal Medicine Department at TTH has fully adapted this program, and it will be expanded to include every department in the hospital.
